Analysis of Newspaper Framing of the Clash Between Shia Muslims and Nigerian Security Personnel

ABSTRACT

  The objective of this study was to ascertain newspaper framing the clash between Shia Muslims and Nigerian security personnel. In doing so, the researchers paid attention to sources of stories, tone of framing as well as frame used. Content analysis was used to implement the study. The duration for the study was January 1st 2015-October 30th, 2019. Two newspapers were examined. They are the Punch and Leadership newspapers. The code sheet served as the instrument for data collection. In the analysis of results for the study, the researchers made both descriptive and inferential statistics. Results were presented in tables. The result of the  study showed that the newspapers examined made use of mostly sources from Nigerian security personnel. In addition, the newspapers used mostly critical frame. Finally, the result of the study showed that the newspapers studied made use of negative frames more than the positive frame. In particular, it was found that the fear frame was promoted more than peace and hope frames put together.      Based on the results of this study, it is recommended, among others, that newspapers should balance their sources in reporting crisis situation so that they can better contribute in crisis management.
