ABSTRACT

There is paucity of literature regarding how newspapers frame the causes and solution to the conflict in Southern Kaduna. This is despite the fact that the conflict has claimed many lives and crippled economic activities in the area. This study examined this issue using a sample of 309 stories from four national newspapers. The study was guided by three objectives and tested two hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Within the framework of agenda setting and framing theories, our result showed that the newspapers studied cited mostly sources from religious leaders. In addition, we found that religion was framed as the dominant cause of the conflict. Other causes as encroachment into farmlands, cattle rustling, as well as the struggle for political power. The solution to the conflict as framed by the newspapers studied include: promoting religious tolerance, taking legal steps, punitive measures against those who promote violence as well as motivating those who promote peace and togetherness. The theoretical and practical implications of the results have been highlighted.
