Developing a Hybrid Multi-Criteria Model for Assessing Technical Factors in Aviation Safety

ABSTRACT

  A model integrating decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), fuzzy logic, analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and quality function deployment (QFD) is developed to evaluate the importance weighting of the technical factors in aviation safety defined by International Air Transport Association. DEMATEL is to detect complex relationships and build relation structure among criteria, AHP is to evaluate the technical factors by using pairwise comparisons, and QFD is to categorize the relationship between criteria and subcriteria by expert’s knowledge. Based on a questionnaire given to aviation professionals, the model shows that the importance weightings of technical factors “Extensive engine failure, uncontained engine fire,” “Design, manufacture,” and “Engine overheat, propeller failure” are most significant at 10.7%, 10.69%, and 10.08%, respectively. The result shows that the effectiveness of the hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model is validated by assessing technical factors in aviation safety.
