From Mao Yuanyi to Mao Zedong: The Fabulous Destiny of Sun Tzu’s the Art of War

Sydney Wen Jang Chu

ABSTRACT

Over China’s 5000 year history, there have been more than 6000 wars fought. [1] There have been an immense number of military books written throughout these ages, the most comprehensive military book being the Wubeizi (the Military Affairs History) edited by Mao Yuanyi (1594–1640). Mao Yuanyi was unsuccessful in his civil examination and his appointment to office was short-lived thanks to his Wubeizi, written in the late Ming Dynasty when northern nomads were challenging the Ming court while the coastal areas were invaded by foreign pirates. He wrote his Wubeizi in 1621, and tried to join the army to compensate for his desire to serve the country when his country was attacked; as a civilian scholar, despite all of his studying, he accomplished little during his short life of military assignments. [2] Nearly three hundred years after Mao Yuanyi was born, another Mao came to life in China, but this Mao differs in that he is a military veteran, a poet, and a successful commander – this is, of course, Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong writes some military treatises such as On Guerrilla Warfare and On Protracted War, but he never officially admits that he read Sun Tzu in his life. It is the work of his admirers, most of them Sun Tzu experts, that claim Mao Zedong helped Sun Tzu revive. [3] Mao Zedong has no blind belief in Sun Tzu, yet still many Chinese Sun Tzu experts believe he is responsible for Sun Tzu’s revival and popularity. [4] It is intriguing to see so many Chinese scholars who believe it was Mao Zedong who revived Sun Tzu, when no one can is sure how much Sun Tzu actually influenced this modern political and military master. It is the intention of this paper to describe the study of Sun Tzu during the time from Mao Yuanyi to Mao Zedong, and explain how the state decided the course of the fabulous journey of the study of Sun Tzu.
